You are cordially invited to join your International Club friends for a culinary adventure to Thailand. We’ll learn how to cook Thai Southern style cuisine, which is considered among the world's most delicious. This style features a unique blend of flavors: hot (spicy), sour (piquant), sweet, and is always highlighted with citrus (lemongrass and lime). The art of cooking Thai food has been developing over the years in accordance with outside influences, especially from the West. Learning Thai cooking is simple, once you understand the mix of ingredients and taste combinations.
Renowned Chef Christopher Kenworthy invites us to Star Bistro to enjoy a fabulous opportunity demonstrate how to cook Thai dishes. The class will include recipes and a delicious traditional Thai dinner. You’ll learn the techniques for making a Thai food from scratch by a master chef! Christopher will teach you all about Thai’s great variety of flavors and tastes while utilizing fresh ingredients available at our local markets.
Christopher, a Washington, DC native has been working in the restaurant industry for a decade and has brought his experience with him to Stars Bistro as Executive Chef. Mostly influenced by the food of his childhood from a first generation Belgian family, Christopher became a self taught chef, working his way through the ranks of prestigious restaurants in DC and Virginia. Some of his noteworthy tenures include Executive Sous Chef of the Aquarelle in the historic Watergate hotel, Butterfield 9, Tallula, and 21p. Christopher brings to Stars a new contemporary flare and menu, concentrating on the use of simplicity to showcase the flavor profiles of high quality ingredients. A rising star in the business, Christopher is a great addition to the Stars family and we welcome him with great appreciation.

Thailand is a small country in Southeast Asia, sharing a peninsula with Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Like all local and national cuisines, the food of Thailand reveals a great deal about the country -- it is a palimpsest of its political history, its trade, and its geography. Thailand sits between the cultural and political powers of India and China, and its food is clearly influenced by both. Yet Thailand's food, like her people, has maintained its own distinct identity. As with meals throughout Southeast Asia, a Thai meal has no courses. And like most cooking of the region, the Thai meal is built around rice. Noodles, probably introduced from China, also play a role in Thai cooking. Rice is the main course, not the side dish -- curries and other hot dishes are eaten by the Thai more as sauces than entrees, flavoring the cool rice. Because Thailand forms a crescent around the Gulf of Thailand and the country is etched with hundreds of miles of rivers and canals, fish is a staple of the Thai diet. Fish sauce (nam pla) and/or shrimp paste (kapee) appear in nearly every recipe. The other distinct flavors of Thai cooking come from the indigenous spices and produce: coconut milk, lemon grass, tamarind, ginger, black pepper, galangal, garlic, cilantro, basil, palm sugar, turmeric, cumin, shallots, and green onions. Last but not least is the chile, a late influx into Thai cooking, having arrived with Portuguese traders early in the 16th century. The chile has become a central player and much Thai food is fiery hot.
