Event Notes
About the Art Exhibit: "Urban X-Ray"
Traditional Costa Rican art has been, in general, linked to country houses. Small adobe houses with clay tiled roofs next to a rough quiet path, probably lined with bushes. As a contrast, famous Costa Rican painters like Rafael Angel "Felo" García and more recently Carolina Rodríguez, have also dedicated their work to urban landscapes, where antennas, cables, roofs, windows, doors, streets, and other elements of the city became the reason for their plastic composition.
Nigro follows the same inspiration, but with a very particular personality where a rich mixture of influences, cubism between pointillism, strong colors create a beautiful effect that shows the love of the artist for the city and the towns of Costa Rica. The use of the palette and the details in each picture transport you to a specific place, the blue green and orange to the Caribbean, the red and yellow to the pacific, the colonial architecture to Guanacaste, to give a few examples. In this exhibit paint dripping is used masterfully to provide depth and texture
Rafael Gutiérrez and The Embassy of Costa Rica is proud to present in this exhibit ten works of art by Rafael Gutiérrez Nigro under the collective name "Urban X-Ray", not only because it allows us to share a striking part of Costa Rica's current cultural movement but also because it shows our cities under a much needed light of optimism.
About the artist
Born in Costa Rica in 1984, Gutiérrez is a publicist by profession; currently he is the Creative Director of the Costa Rican advertising company OMD and dedicates much of his time to his artistic and creative work.
Cities and urban landscapes are in the forefront of his artwork, always trying to make people aware about the need of respecting the spaces where we live.
"A city reflects the progress or setback of a society, it seems to me that in Costa Rica we always talk about our natural beauty but we are indebted to the design of our cities. We do not have to be ashamed, we must build a beautiful city from the basics even if it sound common place, starting at keeping them clean. I seek to raise awareness about the space in which we live. In Latin America we have the peculiarity that all the districts or neighborhoods are united by small houses, the mountains suddenly fill with colors and reflect the disorganized way in which we build. All is a reflection of the lack of planning and a part of our idiosyncrasy. I rescue the color, the textures, the breath of the cities; they all have a life of their own. In some of my paintings I place clocks that show the passing of time, that time that safeguards facts and stories and that also gives value to the space in which we live", he emphasizes.
