Event Description

The International Club of DC, with the cooperation of the Embassy of Slovenia, cordially request the pleasure of your company for an enchanting evening of culture, art, music, cuisine, and wine from Slovenia, featuring welcome remarks by the Ambassador of Slovenia, Ambassador Dr. Božo Cerar.



This is a wonderful opportunity to discover Slovenia through all your senses while meeting diplomats and ICDC members! The evening starts with a concert featuring Vlado Kreslin, one of the most influential Slovenian musicians, who has also performed with REM and Bob Dylan. His distinctive style combines elements of folk, pop and rock music, American blues and even gypsy music. He will perform his music in Slovenian and English, and also present his book of poetry, titled Instead of Whom Does the Flower Bloom, published by Guernica Editions. After the concert indulge in a dinner buffet feast of traditional Slovenian cuisine prepared by the Embassy chef and masterfully paired with Slovenian wine.

Karst Prosciutto on Melon Spread
The Karst region in Slovenia is well known for its magnificent subterranean world of caves but also for its rubin red Teran wine and Karst prosciutto ham.

Carniolian Sausages
Geographically protected Carniolian Sausage or kranjska klobasa is one of the most popular pork sausages in Slovenia.

Belokranjska Pogaca Salted Bread
Slovenia’s southeastern province of Bela Krajina also known as White Carniola is a land of sun-drenched vineyards and birch forests. Belokranjska pogaca is a type of flatbread topped with a layer of caraway, eggs, and sea salt.

Ljubljana Chicken
Restaurants in Slovenia's capital have a long tradition of preparing a variety of fried chicken.

Soca Trout Fillets in Corn Flour
Slovenia’s sea and rivers are full of excellent fish and possibly the gorgeous Soca river provides of the tastiest.

Idrija Zlikrofi Dumplings
Small boiled ravioli from the western Slovenian town of Idrija, formerly known world-over for mercury mining, are filled with potatoes, onions, lard, zaseka (grained bacon with lard) or smoked bacon, spices and herbs.

Potatoes with Cottage Cheese or Compe
Served with cottage cheese, this was once a very widespread dish in the Soca valley, especially around Bovec starting in the 19th century.

Desserts:

Potica Walnut Roll
Potica is the most typical Slovenian dessert. It can be made with more than 80 different fillings. The most characteristic types of potica include tarragon, honey, walnut, poppy seed, chive, raisin and cottage cheese.

Bled Vanilla Cream Cake
The Bled sweet vanilla cream cake is a signature dessert of the lakeside town of Bled, one of Slovenia’s most popular tourist destinations.

Event Notes

Vlado Kreslin is one of the most influential Slovenian musicians, whose distinctive style combines elements of folk, pop and rock music, American blues and even gypsy music. He began as a singer in rock groups (Martin Krpan), gradually breaking through to the foreground also as the author of numerous unforgettable songs. He shared stage with R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Allan Taylor, Sean Cannon of the Dubliners, The Walkabouts, Andy Irvine and many more. His songs have been used as the basis for novels and films and over the years he has toured Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, US, Canada, Germany, Austria, Spain, Bosnia, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Greece, Italy etc.
